I have had a tough time as I have watched my economic standing take such a beating lately.
- My entire career has been engaged in a professional endeavor that required plenty of expensive education.
I had always been an ethical person who went above and beyond what was expected. The rule I grew up with was the harder one worked, the better the pay off down the line. As I rose through the ranks, I always had my eye on the corner office with its own HVAC control. I did find my way to that wonderful office and all the perks that went with it. I was just naive to think that I would be able to keep getting paid in our current business climate. There is a point when, no matter how good you are, the size of the salary becomes a real target for budget cuts. This is exactly what happened to me as soon as I hit my early fifties. My plan was to work until I was 65 or so but, that didn’t happen. I was unceremoniously dumped on a Friday afternoon. It was humiliating but all I could do was take my severance and slide away. However, I am managing now but, I have to be sure that I make every single dollar count. I am on top of things like the cost of HVAC heating and cooling. I have become very proactive at stretching the household budget in order to provide for my family while I transition to the next work chapter in my life.
