Making a Christmas movie in the middle of summer poses many roadblocks.
First off, you need to have the town where the filming is being done on board with redecorating to look like the end of December.
The local folks don’t necessarily want to even think about winter let alone Christmas. Now, we bring in quite a bit of business when we come to town so the local government feels it is a benefit. We use local grocery stores, hotels and even technical services. One company we rely heavily on is the HVAC dealer in town. We need to utilize the equipment that they sell as it is too costly to transport that type from site to site. In most cases we can rent the units to produce that cold feel on the set and most dealers are happy to have the free advertising too. Special effects such as fake snow and decorations can go a long way to making the audience believe that it is the middle of winter, but, you can’t fake the temperature enough without seeing the breath of the actors speaking. For this we rely on those powerful cooling devices to give it that real feel. Without quality HVAC dealers and equipment it just wouldn’t work. In fact, we have had to scrap entire projects when the equipment is not available in an area we intended to use. This means extra money that needs to be spent on scoping out new places, negotiating with local residents and governments, and paying actors to do nothing but wait. No one likes this because is cuts down on profits and drives up production cost.
