I live in an area which is prone to hurricanes & heavy storms. It’s not unrespected for the area to flood, & all of us periodically lose electrical power. A few years ago, all of us got hit by an especially brutal storm. The high winds knocked down trees & power lines. The flooding swept away cars, filled basements & caused a tremendous amount of disfigure. The only road in or out of my neighborhood was completely washed away. We were without electric for numerous straight afternoons, & all of us had no choice of leaving the house. With no power, all of us lived without no running water, lights, sump pump, refrigerator, cooling system or dehumidifier. Because of non stop rain, all of us were unable to open the windows. Without running the cooling system, the heat & humidity of the home was nearly unbearable. Even after the power was restored, it took us a long time to reclaim from the storm. Our basement flooded, & the water left a mess behind. We needed to upgrade the washer, dryer, & water heater. We ran the dehumidifier at maximum capacity, & still faced issues with mold & mildew growth. Despite taking precautions to protect the exterior component of the a/c, a falling branch caused irreparable disfigure. Fortunately, I had invested in flood insurance, & some of these complications were covered. However, it was such a bad experience, that I never want to go through it again. I took out a condo improvement loan & took the precaution of installing a backup generator. Even if all of us lose power, I can now operate household appliances, such as the cooling system, dehumidifier & sump pump for as long as necessary.
